 Australia offers a variety of support services to help refugees and humanitarian entrants resettle and build a new life. These services are free, government-funded, and available through trusted community organizations across the country.

🔹 Who Is Eligible?

 You may receive help if you arrived in Australia under:

  • Refugee visas (Subclass 200, 201, 203, 204)
     
  • Global Special Humanitarian visa (Subclass 202)
     
  • Permanent Protection visa (Subclass 866)
     
  • Some services are also available to temporary humanitarian visa holders, such as those on bridging visas or Safe Haven Enterprise Visas (SHEV).

🏥 Medicare for Immigrants and Refugees in Australia

 Medicare is Australia’s public healthcare system. It helps cover the cost of doctor visits, hospital care, tests, and other essential medical services. Many immigrants, refugees, and humanitarian entrants are eligible for Medicare benefits, either immediately or after meeting certain conditions.

🔹 What Medicare Covers

 With a Medicare card, you may get:

  • Free or low-cost visits to GPs (family doctors)
     
  • Treatment in public hospitals
     
  • Free or discounted diagnostic tests (X-rays, blood tests, etc.)
     
  • Subsidised prescription medicines through the PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme)
     
  • Mental health support, pregnancy care, and more
     

🔹 Who Is Eligible for Medicare?


You may be eligible for Medicare if you are:

✅ Immediately Eligible:

  • Australian permanent residents
     
  • Refugees and humanitarian visa holders (e.g. Subclass 200–204, 866)
     
  • Temporary residents from countries with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (e.g., UK, NZ, Italy, Sweden)
     

🕒 Eligible After Waiting Period:

  • Some skilled workers or temporary visa holders may be eligible after 6–12 months
     
  • People on certain bridging visas may qualify for limited access or none

  1. Go to a Medicare service centre (or apply online)
     
  2. Bring:
     
    • Your passport
       
    • Your visa grant letter
       
    • Proof of Australian address (like a lease or utility bill)

🔹 If You’re Not Eligible Yet

You can still get help at:

  • Community health centres
     
  • Refugee health services
     
  • Bulk-billing doctors who offer free services to low-income people
     

Ask if the clinic offers care without Medicare or with low fees.

📌 Note:

  • Medicare is free to enroll in — you don’t have to pay anyone to apply.
     
  • Refugees and permanent residents are strongly encouraged to enroll right away after arrival.
     
  • For emergencies, public hospitals will treat you regardless of your insurance.

📚 Free English Classes for Immigrants in Australia (AMEP)

 Learning English is one of the most important steps to settling in Australia. The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) offers free English classes to eligible immigrants and refugees to help with everyday communication, job readiness, and community life.

🔹 What Is AMEP?

 AMEP is a government-funded program that provides:

  • Up to 510 hours or more of free English lessons
     
  • Full-time or part-time study
     
  • In-person and online options
     
  • Free childcare while you study (in many locations)
     
  • Flexible learning based on your goals (daily life, job skills, study prep)
     

🔹 Who Can Get Free English Classes?

You may be eligible for AMEP if you are:

  • A permanent resident
     
  • A refugee or humanitarian visa holder
     
  • A temporary visa holder with family or partner visas
     
  • A youth between 15 and 17 who needs English to enter school
     

✅ There is no limit on hours if you registered after October 1, 2020
✅ You must start AMEP within 6 months of arriving (or within 12 months of visa grant)
