 Finding a safe place to live is one of the first and most urgent needs for many immigrants and refugees. Fortunately, there are several national and local programs that can help with temporary housing, rental assistance, and long-term support. 

Refugee Resettlement Agencies

 These agencies are funded by the U.S. government to help refugees and eligible immigrants settle into their new communities. They offer temporary housing, case management, job placement, and housing referrals.

Section 8 Housing Vouchers

 The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program provides rent assistance for low-income families, including qualified immigrants and refugees in some cases.


  • You pay a portion of your rent, and the program covers the rest.
     
  • Eligibility depends on income, family size, and immigration status.

 Understanding immigration laws can be difficult, especially when you're new to the country. Thankfully, there are many free or low-cost legal services available to immigrants and refugees across the United States.

Legal Aid Organizations

 These nonprofit groups offer free legal services to low-income immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. They can help with:

  • Green cards and work permits
     
  • Asylum and refugee status
     
  • Family-based immigration
     
  • Deportation defense

 Even if you don’t have insurance or legal status, you may still qualify for free or low-cost healthcare. The U.S. has many programs and clinics that provide services to immigrants and refugees.

Community Health Centers (FQHCs)

 These are government-funded clinics that offer medical, dental, and mental health care on a sliding scale — meaning you pay what you can afford.

  • Services are offered regardless of immigration status
     
  • You do not need insurance
     
  • Many offer care in your language

Emergency Medicaid

Even if you are undocumented, you may qualify for Emergency Medicaid if you have a serious health emergency that requires hospital care.

  • Covers things like labor & delivery or trauma care
     
  • Must meet income requirements
     
  • Only available for true emergencies
